The innovation
The patented technology from Nanohale takes advantage of the tendencies of certain biodegradable polymers, which are naturally eliminated by the body, to form complexes. The special characteristics of these polymers cause them to spontaneously form complexes in aqueous solutions with oppositely charged proteins or with nucleic acids. The modularity of the polymer – and thus of the nano-carrier system based on it – enables the technology platform to be used for a wide range of applications, meaning that the platform can be readily adapted to many different active substances for binding into drug-delivery complexes.
Formulations
The production of nanostructures often involves extreme conditions which could harm the drug. Not so with the technology from Nanohale. The formulations are created through the spontaneous formation of complexes between the negatively charged active substances and the positively charged polymer. Aside from facilitating production, a further advantage of this method is that it does not require force which might damage the delicate molecular structures of certain active substances. It is expected that the next-generation formulations using this technology will protect medications from attack by enzymes, dramatically improve the bioavailability in new nasal or pulmonary applications, and enable the highly targeted release of powerful drugs.
Objectives
The immediate goal of Nanohale is, through its proprietary technology, to develop entirely new and more convenient modes of application for drugs which until now could only be delivered by conventional means, such as parenteral injection or infusion, thus improving patient compliance. The company, in addition, aims to develop its nano-carrier technology to enable drug delivery which is highly targeted to specific sites in the body.
